Oscar preview: WALL-E

December is my favourite time for a number of reasons, not least of all because it's when movie critics release their top 10 year end lists. As the Oscars approach (Feb 22 2009) I'm going to be previewing films which are likely up for awards.

The first in this series is a movie that caught many by surprise. Before WALL-E was released the question was, after last year's "Ratatouille", which was very well reviewed, how would this fare? Would critics see it as an entertaining but ultimately empty summer blockbuster, or would it have a soul, a la "Finding Nemo". Here's a sample of critics reviews:
"That said, the film stands as a stunning tour de force. I must drop my inhibitions about dropping the M word -- especially since I've already used magnificent -- and call "WALL-E" the masterpiece that it is." - Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal"
"You leave WALL-E with a feeling of the rarest kind: that you've just enjoyed a close encounter with an enduring classic. " - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
"I'm not sure I'd trust anyone, kid or adult, who didn't get a bit of a lump in the throat by the end of WALL-E, a film that brings off what the best (and only the best) Pixar films have: It whisks you to a new world, then makes that world every inch our own. " - Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
"Once again, the Pixar wizards have pushed the animation envelope in unexpected directions and come up with a winner. Wondrously inventive, funny and poignant, "WALL*E" is part sci-fi adventure, part cautionary fable, part satire and part love story, which may be the best and most improbable part of all." - David Ansen, Newsweek
It's a shame that WALL-E won't be considered for Best Picture. Currently tied for the highest scored for 2008 on Metacritic (and top 20 overall of all time), the film is considered too "childish" for academy members to ever consider for their top award. Consider this a lock for best animated feature though, as well as a slew of technical awards.
